Atlanta R&B singerĀ Jacquees recently crowned himself as this generation’s “King of R&B,” sending the internet into a total frenzy-eEe-eeEe.
Not very many people agreed with the statement. In fact, not even his fellow male R&B panty droppers agreed with the sentiment. Trey Songz, Ty Dolla $ign, and even J. Holiday with all of his two hits went straight to social media to drop their two cents.
Crazy how you get a couple weeks on 106&Park and get a little beside yourself.
Now, while I disagree with calling any of these men my generation’s King of R&B, I have to say they would definitely place far ahead of the 5’5 tiny thug in the competition for the title.
However, instead of listing the reasons why the petty pied piper shouldn’t be listed as the king of R&B today, here’s a list of R&B artists (in no particular order) who could take the title.
(Disclaimer: Personally, I believe there is no male artist out there who has the title of this generation’s King of R&B in terms of the combination of numbers and talent. This is STRICTLY the 2000’s)

Tyrese
Chris Brown
Chris had hits okay. He could sing, dance, and act (when he didn’t die within the first 10 minutes of the movie). While he hasn’t had the best success with his last couple mixtapes, he’s still worthy of a spot on the list.
The latest argument to hit the internet claims the Virginia singer would already be the proclaimed King if people would forgive him for the domestic violence incident; but, the fact that he’s still in the conversation with as huge a following as he has and his apparent numbers in 2018 is evidently showing that the altercation from 2012 is having little to no effect on his career other than the fact that people repeatedly bring it up.
His breakout album alone got him a spot. His Michael Jackson tribute performance kept him in the conversation. The Take U Down era pushed him alllll the way over the edge though.
Trey Songz
Trey Songz is iconic to me because he was the first man I got to witness make an entire career from crying over p*ssy. No matter what era of Trey we hadā Trey with braids, Trey with waves, Trey with no hair cut… throughout it all, he made hits crying on a track about some girl’s coochie.
Can’t Help But Wait, Can’t be friends, Love Faces, Neighbors Know My Name, Dive In, etc.
He’s since graduated to making songs about women throwing it all out for him. His more recent hits have had him featured on major tracks like Blac Youngsta’s Booty remix and August Alsina’s I luv it remix.
Also: we need to start putting more respect on Lol š.
Robert (is a monster and should be locked up) KellyĀ

Without talking about his personal life, the Pied Piper of R&B gets a spot on the list because R. Kelly makes hits. There’s a reason y’alls aunties keep defending him on Facebook and won’t take him off the cookout playlist. He’s been around making music since the 90’s and his hits span about 15 years.
Ignition, Remix to Ignition, Feelin on yo booty, Step in the name of love, Same Girl, I’m a Flirt, Slow Wind, TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET, the list goes on.

Love, B.U.D.D.Y., Halfcrazy, Dontchange, Teachme, Ifuleave, Sobeautiful, and he’s still making music.
Musiq Soulchild has his own day in ATLanta. He has his own HOLIDAY in his city. You can’t talk about a King of R&B and leave out a man who has his own holiday.
D’Angelo
To be honest, D’Angelo made this list solely for Untitled (How Does it Feel). The video, the cinematography, the vocals, the melody. Let’s be real, this was a panty dropper.
Ginuwine
Aside from his time spent playing a male stripper in Vivica Fox’s tragic discount Magic Mike, Ginuwine earns a spot on the list for two hits in the 2000’s: Differences and In Those Jeans.
Avant
First of all, I should take him off this list for the mess he pulled here in this video knowing he’s too old to be doing women like this and the caption: “I’m so nasty lol.” Nevertheless, he’s still a hitmakerā and let’s not even talk about when he works with Keke Wyatt!
My First Love, Read Your Mind, Making Good Love, Don’t Take Your Love Away, 4 minutes, Karma, etc. His most recent hit on the billboard top 100 was You & I feat. Keke Wyatt in 2012.
Jamie Foxx
Jamie Foxx is just talented, and that’s that on that. He’s an actor, comedian, and artist. He’s definitely one of the most relevant artists from my childhood working with different artists of the time like Kanye and Drake.
His two albums that solidify his spot? Unpredictable (2005) and Intuition (2008).
Honorable Mention: Beyonce, Ty Dolla $ign, Daniel Caesar, DVSN, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Steve from American Dad, Childish Gambino & y’alls tone deaf DL choir director.
The point is, before Jacquees can be crowned the actual king of R&B for this generation, he has to pay his dues and beat all the people who’ve paved the way for him to even make this gargantuan leap. Don’t get it confused though, Jacquees has some hits, but world wide stardom??? An international title??? He hasn’t even had a number one on the billboard charts.
